Miri is so the happening now!

I was hoping it was an alien invasion, the beginning of Apocalypse, or something equally awesome happening.

Miri suffered a city-wide power outage that hit without prior warning. Everywhere was pitch black. We decided to evacuate to town, like many other people. It was all dark there too. On the road back to the outskirts of Miri, there were people going back hoping their homes would be powered too. Sucks to be them.

Anyway, we found this magical place that wasn’t effected by this outage. Really magical, considering that all major hotels were hit by the outage as well.

Turns out that not only Miri was hit. Most of Sarawak was hit as well [sauce: the Star]. It was really awesome at the time - the confusion of a major power outage, the hordes of people all heading to town as if there was some sort of silent calling before some supernatural mass sacrifice (I was chanting Reuuuuniiiionnnn all the way in the car ride lol). In fact, I was half expecting to see some crazy mushroom cloud in the distance signalling the end of the world.

Turns out, it was far less epic than I hoped.

No mass rioting, no alien invasion (and I was so ready to bow down to our new rulers as well), no nuclear apocalypse - hell, even the Sesco main office wasn’t on fire. At least then I wouldn’t have to pay my bills.

Meh. Miri is not that happening, eh?

Potong Steam…

Wow. So much for the rumours of winds 3x stronger than the night before.

Rather than getting an awesome storm so that I may feel somewhat like Jack Sparrow standing in the crow’s nest, I ended up stranded on a desert island. Damn hot night yo.

Rough Winds Ahoy! Part 2

Almost two years since.

This time it’s back, and probably a lot more awesome than before. In fact, it’s so awesome that it ended up in Yahoo! News. I’m personally wondering if this example of nature’s wrath (it isn’t a woman for nothing) is a direct consequence of the whole Myanmar typhoon thingie.

Hmm… While the storm last night uprooted hell lots of trees, most of us didn’t even realise it was happening. Quoting Scott when we drove to town and back today - “What the hell did I sleep through, man?”. Trees were pulled out of their roots, signboards were thrown around and also ripped apart, lampposts were knocked over, and hell - some roofs were even blown away.

Here’s my account on the whole incident:

1. Went to sleep at around 4pm or 5pm
2. Woke up at 8.34pm to my windows rattling due to the wind
3. Opened the door to see (and feel) the uberwind
4. Realised, “Shit. I can’t go out to eat.”
5. Went back to sleep
6. Woke up and not knowing what the hell blew all the trees away

Damn. I really need to start paying attention to things.

Well, at dinner just now (went early so that I won’t starve if the big winds come again), I overheard someone saying it’ll be 3x stronger tonight. Probably bullshit, but it’s still early now. If it comes true, we’ll have one hell of a night ahead of us.

I saw Fiyah!

I swear. I didn’t do it this time.

Some car was on fire at the Curtin roundabout 2 nights ago.

Cacat Curtin internet won’t let me upload that picture I drew in paint. Damn.

But yeah, lots of people. And Bertman even went and climbed into the car late at night. Just for kicks.

Woo.

Roadblock WTF?!

It all started when I received not one, but two text messages with the (directly quoted) warning “Guys there r police at before security check point checking licenes. Tell ur friends as well.”. Being the kind not the pay much heed to or fall into these chain text messages - I didn’t forward it to anyone, but kept the warning in mind.

Went to campus this afternoon with Kroll for our FTV screening, but there was no roadblock - so we thought it was just some wild rumour. After that we went for a drink, and when we were on the way back…

ROADBLOCK WTF?!

Yeah man. There was a roadblock right after the Senadin roundabout on the road to Curtin. Quite smart, actually. There was no place to run after the corner and people get caught by surprise. Even Kroll got a shock and went “WTF man?!” and fumbled for his seatbelt. The pigs didn’t see him fumbling for his seatbelt, so he got off with no problem. Plus he had a license - so yeah. Heck, even I’ve got a license.

Here’s a badly drawn picture of the area.

My badly drawn map…

There were quite a few pigs there, and I was actually quite tempted to snap a photo, but I decided against it. You know how paranoid those pigs can get. So yeah, ugly map for you then. Saw a few people we know get stopped - hopefully they’re okay.

Anyway, this is my public warning for all Curtin students who read my blog - if you have no license, refrain from driving to Curtin at the moment. Them damn pigs are roaming. You know who you are, so just be careful. And if you’re a blogger, be an ass and warn everyone with your blog as well. We need more people to know.

It’s always like this isn’t it? The people vs the government. I guess it’s not changing any time soon. =)

Booking a Suite

A *hotel* suite~

There goes my habit in posting pictures that have absolutely nothing to do with the subject in hand, but is somehow related to it due to some trivial similarity. Like this one. Yes. And you thought I was going to write something about 5-star hotel suites and fornication between two willing biologically oppositional parties. Or something along the line.

But nah. Let’s not be potong steam. Continue reading ‘Booking a Suite’

PC Fair Sucks!!

Lol. I think it’s called PIKOM or some shit like that. Not that it matters. It’s a total dump there.

As usual, it’s held at the indoor stadium. This is some annual thing, actually - since I remember going to this same event last year - and not really liking it. It passed off as okay last year because I actually bought speakers. This year, it totally sucks. There was nothing that I wanted, and thus I felt cheated. Give me back my time, Miri!!

Walked round and round the booths, which were laid out in a really confusing manner. It’s so easy to get lost in there, even with the small number of booths. It just looks very… backwater and messy. There weren’t that many people in there either. At least, it’s not as crowded as Lowyat Plaza in KL. There, it’s like a PC Fair every single day. Heaven for computer geeks like me. ^_^

Anyway, according to an anonymous source (identity witheld to protect that individual), prices have been jacked up for the fair. Rather ironic considering that people go to the PC Fair in hopes of getting cheap hardware. Some Logitech laptop mouse that was normally sold in the streets for RM40 was being sold at the fair for RM49.

I’m guessing they would give you RM9 discount for the mouse. Damn. That’s Brunei Indian sports shop marketing strategy right there. o.o (No, I’m not being racist. That is how they sell stuff in Brunei.)

Akibat Lansi

It really pays to be an observer at times. It really pays to not be drunk at a bar at times.

Once again, yet another Saturday night, everyone decided to go clubbing at Thai Bar. I didn’t have much to drink, mainly because I was following another car, and we stopped at an ongoing party beforehand. There were free drinks, but I only managed to scab a beer before we had to go. Not nearly enough to get me even tipsy.

The good thing about being at a bar late at night is that everyone assumes that everyone else is drunk, or at least tipsy. I really got a brand new perspective of the clubbing scene - one which is not tinted by alcohol. One thing is that nobody really cares who your are - you go there, you say hi, and people will say hi back regardless of whether they know you or not. They’re usually too fucked up to care.

And yes, after finishing the jug of beer your ordered, you can very easily go up to a table of people you know and scab beer off them - nobody gives a damn. And you know what? Chances are, you won’t even need to try - they’ll probably try to get you drunk and give you free beer anyway. If you’re lucky you might even get some liquor.  And I won’t even begin to talk about food. Yeah man.

Well, another thing I found was that you do not fuck around with people you do not know. Scabbing drinks is fine, but being an idiot and acting all high and mighty is the dumbest thing anyone could do - as I have witnessed just now.

I may or may not have mentioned in a previous blog post that there was a fight last week - pools of blood and whatnot. Regardless, another fight occurred just now. And this time, I was right there - sober and having fun scabbing cigarettes off friends.

There was this dude (most probably piss drunk) who decided that he was too good. He offended a girl, and that girl had connections - definitely a sign not to fuck around. But no~ He had to be cocky and all to the girl. The next thing we knew, the dude got chased to the corner shop of the lot and got whacked up like shit. He was lucky the fight got stopped rather quickly, else he wouldn’t get away with only a bloody face and a bruised eye.

Kinda spoiled the night for us after that - we decided to go quickly after apologising to the people who beat the dude up on his behalf (yes, it was the guy’s fault for acting all lansi). The sup tulang after that was really good though. Mmm…

Anyway, lesson of the day (night?) is: Don’t fuck around with people you don’t know in clubs if you value your life.

First Year, First Day

And so it begins. My first step into Degree in Mass Communications. I must say though - it sounds much more exciting here than it was this morning. I have yet to learn that four hours of sleep is less than sufficient to maintain concentration in class. Some things, some people never learn. I blame DotA. And the blog you’re reading right now.

I’d say the assignments are a breath of fresh air though - I won’t elaborate in what way, but let’s just say it’s a welcome change after that blondie bullshit about the P-word last semester. Sometimes, just sometimes, I’m rather glad that I’m in Malaysia. Malaysia Boleh (lah)!

I got a rather interesting angle on the rather pathetic situation within Curtin Sarawak’s management, though. While most of us already know about the hoohah that has been going on about bookstore refunds, recruitment of noob lecturers and the perpetual groundbreaking - there is, according to my sources, a hell lot more.

Apparently Curtin Sarawak has not had one groundbreaking event, but fucking three. And supposedly it happened every time there was some big-shot minister tualiap came over to visit. I guess I won’t bee seeing the so-called phase two any time soon then?

“Tell you lah, the grass already grow back at where they dug the hole. They waiting for the tree to grow back also is it? Cibai.” (quoting myself during a random conversation with friends)

Given their lack of ability to commence development of any sort, I’d actually expect them to accept an offer they received. The offer was simple, Curtin Sarawak provides land (which the government provided to CSM for free anyway), and the people in the football club funds all development costs for the sporting facilities in their supposed ‘phase 2′ - swimming pool, proper gym (not that crapshit stuffy storeroom they have now), different sports areas, and of course, a big and proper football field.

Personally, I see no catch, and while I would very much like to remain critical and believe that Curtin Sarawak has a reason for what it did, my personal cynicism towards big organisations reigns. Oh, and did I mention that I also heard that Curtin Sarawak owes a certain football team RM18k?

Okay, now for the kicker. Disclaimer: The past few paragraphs above critical of the management in Curtin University of Technology, Sarawak are the opinions of a third-party and not those of the author. The author merely paraphrased and interpreted what he understood from his source of information.

Take that. With that, I shall not accidentally undermine my academic future because of a simple blog post. If you were hoping to get me into shit for this post, fuck you larr. Being a Malaysian, I know better than to mess around with big organisations without insurance. ^_^

Oh, by the way, Eew was holding a Sex Education 101 lecture at the cafeteria yesterday afternoon. A hell lot of us were there laughing our asses off. Respect to Aaron and Danny for your really… interesting questions. Heh.

O-Nite Semester 1, 2007

You didn’t think I would let this event pass me by without going out to test my Nikon 8800, would you? 56k-er’s beware~ Muahaha.

Nay, O-Nite (3rd March 2007, Saturday) came and went, and I was there. Officially, as an unofficial photographer (that made sense, right?), but of course, the main motive was to train my social skills. New students are always (psychologically) easier to approach - new people tossed into an alien environment. Of course, there are a few lansi people here and there, but I guess that is inevitable.

Needless to say, I learnt a valuable lesson in social engineering - if you act like you belong, you do. I was pretty nervous when I first arrived at Piasau Boat Club (where the event was being held) because there was a reception table with a name list - it seemed as if you need your name to be on the list to be granted entry. I just walked around and started taking photographs. Turns out that they didn’t give a shit. So lesson learnt - assume that they don’t give a shit until they actually do. Simple in theory, hard in practice.

Registration for New Students

So yeah, there’s the whole big group of new students checking up their name on the registration table. It pays to arrive early and flow in with the crowd. Of course, it also pays to know a few people in the organising party. Continue reading ‘O-Nite Semester 1, 2007′
